I think people who are very online tend to greatly overestimate how much attention the average person is paying to Elon Musk.
Victim blaming much?
I’m sorry, were these people forced into buying this obviously dumb product?
No, but saying they deserve what they get removes all responsibility from Tesla to actually deliver on their promises at the point of sale. Basic functionality is inherently one of those.
Of course Cybertruck buyers should be expected to have to put up with some crap for being early adopters of such obvious bullshit, but that doesn’t mean they should have a truck that breaks down while driving away from the dealership.
(Lulz. This guy thinks that companies are held accountable for crappy products.)
They should be… But they just… Aren’t.
The best way is to return said crap, get a refund, and then publicly complain about. That’s the main feedback loop. If the owners won’t do that then they don’t deserve a lot of sympathy.
The OP article is about forum posts where people are publicly complaining about it. I bet if you go into those you’ll find stories of abysmal customer service from Tesla, pushing repairs with ridiculously long wait times over refunds.
I don’t know what you expect from a vehicle that had the developers literally come out and say “yeah we didn’t crash test it and have no plans to”
Nobody held them at gunpoint making them buy it. All the evidence was there it was going to be trash, look hideous, and have terrible build quality. There comes a point the consumer is fully responsible for their decision. This is just another case of play stupid games win stupid prizes.
There comes a point the consumer is fully responsible for their decision.
At what point is that? Setting aside your opinions for this particular brand.
I don’t think there should be anything that takes all the responsibility away from the seller and leaves it with the buyer. Particularly not with a purchase over $10k, let alone a new purchase direct from a manufacturer.
Essentially, the logical conclusion of what you’re saying is that it’s ok for people to scam people, so long as it was obviously a scam, in your opinion.
Your well thought out post and the downvotes it received are the main reason I don’t come on here that often.
One question: why do you think they are victims?
Because they made a purchase that didn’t match what was advertised.
They prepaid for a product that was guaranteed by the manufacturer to have certain attributes. Why wouldn’t this be the manufacturer’s responsibility to be accurate of their description of amenities?
Exactly. Tesla early adopters deserve to have a bumpy ride with it, but they don’t deserve to be left out $70k or however much and not even have a working vehicle. They deserve a refund from the manufacturer who didn’t provide a product fit for service.
I agree, but I have some bad news for you if you think that consumer protection is a big deal in the USA…
I don’t like Musk, but it is disappointing that people that may have intended to make a purchase decision for at least modestly environmentally conscious considerations are getting trash instead of what was advertised. Hopefully they get refunds that they can put towards a Rivian or Ford Lightning.
Hit a nerve, sweetheart?
… no?
caveat emptor
Is a terrible way to handle sales from a corporation. When I purchase certain items I should be able to trust that it has certain quality of build or they’ll be liable as a business.
Now did these people make themselves marks? Yes, but even a blatant mark should have consumer protections
That applies to private sales between individuals, not between manufacturers and consumers. The manufacturer has obligations to ensure what they claim is a true and honest representation of what they’re selling.
The real irony here is that you’re basically siding with and defending Telsa in terms of their legal disputes with their customers.
Tesla should be raked over the coals for their serious lapses in, well, everything. Maybe if there was some sort of function to keep them accountable this wouldn’t happen, but money buys justice as we have seen over and over. I don’t blame the first adopters as he wasn’t quite known for his playing games and some of the first items were so sought after and weren’t quite this low level quality. But after all the stories came out of how there were serious issues with the other models the old saying remains. Should we be able to trust these huge companies? Yes. Can we trust these companies? No.
I still find it hard to believe people paid money for this trash. Have seen a few on the road and it looks even worse in person. Almost convinced the few people I see are paid by Tesla to “show them off”
I don’t even know what the marketing pitch is for this thing. Middle aged Tesla fanatics with too much money than brains?
A fool and his money…something something…
I watched DeMuro’s video on it, because it’s the first close look I’ve been able to get without it being marketing nonsense.
The tonneau cover is neat. It’s like a rolltop desk cover, motorized.
Literally every other design choice is either stupid or dangerous.
The hard tonneau cover is often an option on most trucks.
Motorized tonneau covers are aftermarket addons that add around 2k to the price of the vehicle, plus installation.
They also take up a not insignificant amount of space near the front of the bed with the canister.
Teslas solution genuinely looks pretty good all things considered. Time will tell how they hold up. People are usually 50/50 on if they like their tonneau covers or think that they’re leaky garbage.
Ok I can see you are an enthusiast about this issue, and that’s fine with me. My question is how many of you are there, who would consider a really obviously flawed truck that costs at least 30k more than a real truck because it has a nice tonneau that would save you 2k?
As long as you can impale pedestrians on the sharp front corners, it’s all good.
And chop off your fingers if you close the frunk on em
I think some truck people are considering a cyber truck, but likely more potential customers are cross shopping it against luxury SUVs or loaded pickups. It has utility, but it’s also cool and a great way to show your neighbors that you either have money to burn or that you’re trendy. When a Suburban or Yukon stickers for around 70k and blends in with traffic, you need something else to make a statement.
Until a cybertruck is legitimately 50k or widely available used for cheaper, it’s out of reach of the average owner.
The cover is cool, but it won’t be the sole feature that switches somebody from buying a conventional 50k crew cab pickup for getting groceries into a an 80k crew cab electric pickup for getting groceries.
That all being said, I’d love to own one to get groceries in if somebody offered me one for cheap. I like boxy 80s cars so the style works for me.
I appreciate the detailed response. I don’t know if someone who is considering a similarly priced luxury vehicle would find the spartan interior to be adequate, but hey I’m also more of a 40k vehicle kind of guy so that’s not my role to play here.
I have Maverick hybrid and I love it. It’s not a “real” truck, but I’m not in need of one. I got it used and it came with a pretty nice tonneau. Also it’s closer to the ranger’s size than the current ranger, which has that tooted up rear end woof.
I got a santa-cruz. Originally wanted a Mav hybrid but they were unobtainable at the time, and I lucked into a hell of a deal on fully loaded SC.
It’s got the roll cover. I originally had planned on taking it off because, as noted, the canister takes significant space, but all in all it’s just to damn convenient. While I agree the way tesla did their cover seems slick, I’d have a lot of reservations about it being motorized, especially with Teslas build quality issues.
But @car@[email protected] I think is right. At the price point, you’re not buying for practicality anymore. No one needs a vehicle at that price point (unless your legitimately hauling horses across multiple states or something), so they’re buying on feel. But ultimately I think that’s going to be what the death knell of Tesla is. The tech is no longer leading, there are still build issues, and the “statement” someone would be looking to make by paying that sticker is rapidly not becoming a good one.
And I’m in the same boat. They’re my kind of hideous. I’d love one someday, but I’d pay about as much as I’d pay for an MGB or Triumph, because I put it in the same category.
My Internet education has learned (sic) me forums are a place to complain no matter how good the product is. Also ice publications love shitting on ev’s any way they can. This however I’m absolutely believing.
Yeah the cybertruck is garbage, but forum complaints existing is a meaningless measure. Every product in existence has forums where you can find people complaining about the product.

Unless that product is a Brother laser printer
I have had to perform a repair on my 13 year old Brother laser printer. I’m a little sore about that.
I found mine in a bin ten years ago, bought a toner cartridge, and have only printed a dozen pages since then. What waste of money, I’m furious!
How much longer until Tesla cancels this project and proclaims this model is a “limited edition”?
Musk is too ego driven to let this fail, he would bet the company if he had too, is my guess.
This was the first post I saw after seeing one driving the opposite way on the highway;
it’s hideous
CyberFucked
So the vehicle that looks like it was constructed after the apocalypse happened is actually living up to it’s looks. This is literally a prop from a MadMax movie.
It looks like a lunar vehicle that has a max speed of 12 km/h.
I still can’t get over the design. It looks so aesthetically unpleasing and like something out of a dystopian future from a 1980s movie.
That actually was the idea. Personally, I like the low-poly, 80’s cyberpunk look. I just hate that it’s a Tesla and has tons of other issues besides what it looks like.
Total Recall would like a word.
Freejack would like someone to remember it exists.
Damnation Alley needs to have a word with all of you
They’re gonna need to install the Foxconn nets outside their customer service call centers if they keep selling these trucks

Probably for the best
:'D it’s a DeLorean lol
DeLoreans were better quality steel and didn’t rust in the rain.
Stainless steel even.
They were also made by people with actual industry experience. They sucked at making a product people wanted but they didn’t such at actually making a product.
Yea this
Some of them even traveled in time.
Don’t you fucking dare
I’m definitely kidding
I just saw one of these fucking things IRL for the first time driving down the opposite lane as me on my way home.
It’s bigger and uglier than it looks in pictures. I thought it was like the size of a Model 3 or there abouts. Shit was bigger than an Escalade.
LOOOOOOOOOL
