It has been a while since I applied anywhere… but they all want degrees and professional experience last time I looked :(

Idk maybe I should start applying again sometime. It’s not like I have a resume to show them beyond retail/supply chain work though lol. I don’t even have contributions to open-source projects to show tbh. I never finish any of my projects. doomjak

Hmm are there any open source projects you could see yourself working on? Maybe start small instead of planning your own thing which you don’t finish. Sorry I don’t want to give you unsolicited advice. I don’t even know if the advice I give is any good.

I actually have worked on a few open-source projects but I never submitted my patches… then I forget about them and they get lost to time lol. On stock OpenBSD (which I run), my desktop PC’s audio is kinda broken (long story, can link you a post I made about it if you’re curious) so I had to patch the OpenBSD kernel Intel HDA (corpo acronym but the last letter means “audio”) driver to make it work properly (had to add a whole new mode of operation for what I think is probably broken hardware, like my motherboard manufacturer fucked it up). I’m still maintaining that patch on my own lol, I need to submit it.

It’s good advice and I don’t mind, I’m just maining untreated ADHD rn, maybe that’s why I don’t do these things

As for my own projects… these grand and often probably ridiculous ideas for software (recent example: video game as a filesystem) come into my head and I hack on them obsessively for a while and never finish them because of the scale :(

That sounds super cool, as I said I kinda hate computers I only turn on my desktop every now and then to play games or make music on it. You should definitely submit the patch. Is there a hacker space in your area you could maybe meet other people who like computers and that can also lead to career opportunities. Also you could meet other people who want to hack on your crazy ideas with you. Maybe start one if there isn’t one in your area.

The only reason I ever got into any computers/electronics was because I wanted a weird groove box, it turned out I just hated everything about it. Now I have a bunch of hardware lying around. I always hoped some one would help me build it but people were always just like you’re smart you can do it yourself. Since I just kinda hate doing it though it’ll never get done. Or maybe I’ll manage this school I’ve signed up to and it will be my graduation project let’s see. The untreated adhd sounds horrible, you should try treat that asap.

Anyways I hope my random advice is useful
