Scientists actually did this to ants to determine whether they navigated by counting their steps

(Ants also do complex geometry by instinct and they even triangulate positions with the sun as reference, they are amazing)
Wait a tic counting? there’s a science explanation or ‘counting’ is the layman’s term for what they’re doing? I’m asking cuz i was under the impression most animals don’t know numbers at all
