What is grating enough online is much worse coming from a g7 government. The Conservatives, who have spent 14 years running Britain, increasingly subscribe to a narrative that they were a mere bit-part player, rather than its main actor. Gazing upon a dying Conservative administration in 1993, Lord Lamont, who had recently been sacked as chancellor, accused Sir John Major’s government of being “in office but not in power”. What was once an attack has now become the party’s principal defence: the Conservatives may have been in office, but they were never in power. Call it UwU Conservatism.

It’s annoying how this keeps happening to ideas. It’d be cool if someone could trace the lineage of: new, accurate critique of the world -> critique’s general proliferation and linguistic adoption because of its truth -> low-tier orbiters using critique incorrectly as an insta-win argument online, losing its original meaning.

I could only see this working if they straight-up close the store when the prices are adjusted or eventually maybe forcing shoppers to use carts/baskets with digital price tallies that you gotta’ like press a button on each price display as you grab items or something. I don’t know, a physical store with actual space and people is so much harder to rig like this than a digital storefront, I don’t know if you can mesh them in a way that doesn’t destroy any benefit for shopping in-person and I don’t see how if the prices are raised enough it doesn’t become beneficial for people to hire someone poorer for minimum wage to buy their groceries for them.
