Yes, many people in South Africa are still so racist that they do the fried chicken stereotype thing and insinuate that this is a tactic that black majority political parties use to “buy votes”.

the idea that black people love fried chicken an inordinate amount is fucking stupid af, because literally fucking everybody loves fucking fried chicken

whenever we do fried chicken at work, which isn’t even as good as KFC mind you because the most seasoning the other cooks generally put in the flour (not even a full egg wash—> flour —> egg —> bread crumb treatment to make the breading ACTUALLY good) is some lawry’s seasoned salt (that I don’t even think has MSG? because it doesn’t list MSG in the ingredients?) people literally eat 3-5x as much of it as they do anything else.

I’ve had to do the fried chicken ONCE so far and despite being a relatively slow night (maybe 70% of a “busy” night) we cooked 140Ib of it and they ate every last bit. For comparison, on a general BUSY night they’ll eat like maybe 110Ib of protein overall, split between two different entrees. So they might eat like 80Ib of flank steak and 20-30Ib of shrimp or whatever.

Someone coming through the line told me she used to work at a different university in the area and they’re more open to the public so people from other schools would show up for their fried chicken and they’d go through like 300-400Ib of it per night with lines out the door and into the street

Someone explained to me once that the reason that fried chicken and watermelon are used in racist stereotypes is because they’re messy finger food, that you don’t need a knife and fork to eat, and can leave crumbs all over your face. It’s trying to hint at ideas of Africans being “primitive savages.”
