The vast majority of convictions occur at the state level.

Yes, I believe it is universal for politicians to try to do things for their constituents in an attempt to get elected.

      That’s like literally their job.

That should have been done the second it was legalised (don’t get me started on before then and who these laws were written to target in the first place), waiting this long is nothing to be proud of, it’s bare minimum shit…

You do realize that it’s not actually legal Federally, right?

And due to anti-drug treaties we have with other nations, it may be a good long while before it’s even possible to make it legal Federally.

So wherever it is fucking legal already (there are absolutely still people imprisoned for offences that no longer exist in their state), way to miss the point…

Federal prison is different from state prisons.

I understand the frustration but point your anger at the right people.

The head of our system doesnt make state based decisions. Which is where the legalizing and the majority of criminalizing has been happening.

              So, not the right person.

I don’t think you fully understand the relationship between federal and state law, or between repealed / altered laws and those who were convicted beforehand.

Marijuana is still classified as a schedule 1 drug and remains federally illegal.

May not be for long. Process has been ongoing to reschedule it (likely to Schedule III):

There are bills to reschedule or deschedule it every year, every one so far has failed. As of today, marijuana is federally illegal, thus any federal criminal charges stand unless otherwise pardoned/commuted.

Federal agencies have been asked to reduce their amount of arrests for simple, nonviolent possession, but there’s still plenty of people getting freshly charged at both the federal and state level today.
