I know I could duckduckgo it, but I think we’re at the stage at lemmy where there’s space to ask basic questions.

What is it? Why does it matter? Users at which lunix proficiency level should care about it? Is it just yet another competing standard or is x actually going to die?

Wayland was created by X devs. X evolved over 30+ years, and some of the design decisions made in the past proved not to be the best options over time. X is antiquated, redicuously complicated, and hopelessly insecure by modern standards. Instead of trying to hack together another major revision of X, it was decided a complete redesign from scratch was needed.

Thus, Wayland was born. It has taken more than 10 years, but the collaborative efforts of hundreds of individuals and dozens of organizations have made Wayland perfectly usable as a daily driver today. X11 has been kept on life support all this time while Wayland matures, but at this point I expect Wayland will be the default for most major distros in the next year or two. It already is the default for many distros!
