If this were to happen to my Steam account even if just for a few days, I’d never purchase a game that’s not 100 % DRM free ever again and I’d also pirate my whole library.

I don’t know Sony, you’re kind of messing things up lately.

why even build this option into the system? no troll is going to care after a year…no legitimate sicko is going to be cooled off by forever either

Account bans (not access to online services) should literally only be forever. They’re for fraud and hacking and shit.

Nothing that doesn’t warrant a lifetime ban should remove access to games.

Why would you ban anyone who truly deserves it (e.g. for cheating or harassment or sexual harassment) for anything less than forever? What would you gain from giving them a chance to come back other than a high chance for more moderator headaches?

Pshh you’re being downvoted but fuck that. If a ban is legit, make it permanent. Cheating? Shouting slurs at folks? Fuck off, banned forever. Companies used to do that, now they’re WEAK

If it came with no downsides, sure. Not being able to play Playstation is a very minor part in life not really deserving any kind of “fundamental rights” based argument, unlike locking people up.

Do you not have a fundamental right to the goods you purchase?

But you didn’t purchase them, you licensed them conditionally.

In other words, no you do not currently have a fundamental right to that content.

hi, sometimes people get banned for no reason.

if they’re a repeat offender, ban them again easy.

        otherwise, nah.

people let their siblings, children, friends play on their consoles.

Oh, there should absolutely be ways to appeal a ban if you have a legitimate argument, but making it temporary for everyone is just insane.

bans are already temporary in the sense that offenders can acquire new accounts, hardwares, or networks to circumvent them anyway. all that permanent bans does is guarantee that people who are falsely banned, arent repeat offenders, or even got hacked themselves get permanantly banned.

appeal processes arent a guarantee to getting an account back.

Games have much more strict bans than they need imo.

a lot of terrible chat filters have gotten people permabanned and thats kinda just it. im here for no permanent bans.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Many PlayStation Network users reported Monday that their accounts were unexpectedly permanently suspended.

“This account is permanently suspended from PlayStation Network due to violations of the PlayStation Network Terms of Service and User Agreement,” Sony said in a message to one user.

A user on Reddit reported getting a similar message, and a look at PlayStation accounts on Facebook and Instagram shows dozens of people who’ve received similar notices in the last few hours.

I’ve also seen reports from the gaming forum ResetEra and from Verge readers who wrote into our tips inbox.

Some who have received these suspensions are understandably distraught, as they may have spent a lot of money on digital PlayStation games that they no longer have access to.

I booted up my PS5 and was able to jump into Baldur’s Gate 3 and Fortnite just like I normally would, and I was also able to log into the iOS PlayStation app without seeing a ban.
