Last month we set a starry banner image for Matariki. It would be good to have some suggestions for new banner images.

So please post some suggestions, if we can get a few different ones to line up for the next few months (changing each month) that would be great. Original content encouraged but not required!

Upvote the ones you like and we’ll try to prioritise them. We will start with a new image from next month (September).

Just so we know what we’re talking about, this is the current banner image. You see it when you go to the community page (though it can look different depending on app or how you’re accessing it):

This has my vote. Beautiful spot.

Do you have to access lemmy from the web to see the banner images? As a Reddit refugee because of Apollo I’m pretty much mobile only. Is there a way to see them on mobile or is it app dependent?

Thank you, it is indeed a beautiful spot. Plus, seals!

As for the banner images, you can see it in the app as well, but that’s app dependent.

Here’s how the current banner looks like in Sync:

Thanks for submitting this. I had intended to add it for September, but missed it and feel like it should be up a whole month. So I’ve thrown in another image for the rest of this month, and I’ll add this one for October 🙂

Thanks for submitting this. I had intended to start photos in September, but missed it and feel like they should be up a whole month. So I’ve thrown in another image for the rest of this month, have the other submitted photo for October, and I’ll add this one for November 🙂

Other suggestions for months without significance:

Haast eagle, moa, other native birds

    Tane Mahuta and native bush

Maybe feature small towns around NZ? Or interesting locations, like the toilets in Kawakawa, Rotorua museum, or Te Puia…

Maybe Ruapehu or Taranaki since they will have snow right now.

Never did like those flags. Shame no one came up with a compelling design. Perhaps it wasn’t the time?

I agree, I really don’t like those designs.

I think the main problem was the obvious alternative was the silver fern (on a black flag). But that was ruled out because the All Blacks wanted to keep making money off it. If someone had managed to make a silver fern design that had avoided trademark issues, it might have gained some momentum.

Plus John Key made it quite political, so it made it hard for people who didn’t like him (which was a pretty substantial portion of the population) to support change.

Didn’t John Key’s favourite turn out to resemble the ISIS flag a little too much?

I think there were some interesting options submitted but the Powers That Be selected some pretty dull ones for everyone to vote on.

They tried to say the silver fern flag looked too much like the Isis flag, but that was just bullshit and the real reason it wasn’t an option was NZ rugby had blocked it
