Eh. I don’t know what the specific story behind OP’s post was, but generally whenever I see things like “they gave life to the community” or whatever trotted out as a defense of a banned poster, it was usually an idiot troll whose usual contribution was to derail every discussion and piss people off. They only gave life to community if you define “life” as a high post count, which is a flawed metric for this very reason.

Your phrasing implies that the issue was that farmers all sat about at home not working because they weren’t getting paid. There were plenty of problems, but I’ve seen scant evidence that that the threat of getting fired for not doing your job was even in the top three.

  • Pre-internet there was a certain amount of natural limit on how much bullshit one could spread, because you had to print physical newspapers and find distributors, which meant that you had to have a name and a business address people could find you at.

With 2000s Internet this limiter was removed, but counterbalanced by everyone being able to present their own side for the marketplace of ideas.

Now in 2025 we’re in the worst of both worlds, where a tiny number of trillion-dollar companies control 98% of Internet traffic and are making it clear that they have no qualms abusing that power to shape public discourse.

just got a bunch of his friends to agree with him

You mean the International Astronomical Union? I mean at some point if every world-level expert on the topic is saying the same thing, then maybe you need to let go of what Miss Honey told you in first grade.

  • …however, go to to the top of your question, modern Vietnam is doing ok compared to its immediate neighbours. There’s some amount of corruption at various levels of government but this seems to be improving slowly. The main utilities etc are govt owned so stuff like mobile phone plans are reasonably priced. Commerce is thriving, but I don’t think that was ever banned in the first place.

They relaxed visa requirements for visitors more recently, so the tourist spots are WAY more crowded than 15 years ago.

  • The South were not above bad behaviour, some evidence of which is in the Museum of War Remnants in HCMC, but this is true of most wars ever.

I don’t think it’s useful to make a good/bad guys argument case for North vs South, but it is easy to make a case that the USA committed a lot of heinous atrocities in that whole region for little reason beyond the fact that the rich people in charge didn’t like the idea of communism becoming popular and their wealth being taken from them.

There are no shortage of stories of Viet Cong being sneaky or less than gracious hosts to captured POWs, but these often skim over the fact that they were the ones being invaded; it’s churlish to conduct a massively asymmetrical assault on a peasant village with helicopters, bombers and Agent Orange, and then complain that their prison facilities weren’t up to your standards…
