Genuinely might be my favorite scene in the movie. One conversation and it lays out everything so perfectly and precisely while never leaving the metaphor of the Matrix. Especially the comment about these people being the very people they are trying to save - but until they are, they can’t see through the system. It’s how I feel every time someone tells me I’m being hyperbolic about capitalism or idealistic about socialism.
I yearn for the days of ordering from a local Chinese place that was definitely a front, you could get a bag of wantons literally the size of your head for $5
headstrong, I’ll suck you off, headstrong, I’ll suck off anyone
I believe that’s only in the animated version, in the comic he just fails to save him. The comic gets weird as hell tho, beyond just the typical complete misunderstanding of communism, capitalism, really anything about material reality or human nature.
Don’t worry it’s not the silly letter quote - I know that would be devastating to lose
We have both - seeing this one (or maybe a variation on it) this morning was what prompted me to actually go find the source, I was curious. Is there anywhere to see a list of taglines?
Oh shit I’m sorry, I didn’t realize. I’ll put it in an archive link
Thankfully the silly letter quote is real, if we lost that one I would be inconsolable
I mean tbh I also wondered that but I saw it enough times I just kind of assumed even he got pissed off enough to say that once
I don’t know anything about SDL but we literally have that quote as a site tagline and I see it here all the time, I went to go find the origin and found this. Apologies if I posted a bad source, truly don’t know anything about them
Previously I’d always said Buttigieg but a Newsom/Buttigieg ticket would not surprise me at all either, I am just assuming the rat will still be involved. AOC will be an even more controlled opposition than Bernie was, she’ll spend the primary talking about how the frontrunner doesn’t go far enough then she’ll get in line and endorse around February 2028.
Ah sorry, I was just being a smartass, no idea how much VR is on mturk now. To be clear I think you’ve got an accurately bleak view of the future of this stuff
My one quibble: that’s not the future of gig work, it’s the present
The phrase “South Korea has no first graders” had such “the west has fallen (mom took away my PSP)” energy I had to do a little digging to see if the numbers were being fudged - 157 elementary schools is about 2.5% of the elementary schools in ROK assuming this data from the ROK Ministry of Education is accurate. Not an insignificant percentage for something this crazy, but I’d like to see this data over time. I worry I sound like I’m awarding Pinocchios but it irks me to see that headline presented as if it’s the majority of schools
What’s funny is I never even saw the Sabine video on capitalism everyone hates cause I dropped her when she started saying stupid shit about HRT. But yeah this definitely isn’t that bad, I think you’re exactly right about it being some weird balancing act.
I really like/liked this guy and I remember when I first found him I thought he had really good material analysis and then learned after that he says he’s a structural Marxist or something and was excited. I can deal with the Stalin ate all the grain crap but was mostly turned off by the bit about people treating Marxism religiously in the modern day, which is not how I feel at all. There’s baby leftists out there who maybe are just waiting around for the second coming of the USSR (but perfect this time) but I felt he was painting with too broad a brush and dismissing historical materialism as ahistorical just because capital is in fact hard to win against. Bordering on end of history stuff.
I think maybe it annoyed me to see someone who I usually felt had really good rational analysis say some dumb ass shit (looking at you Sabine Hossenfelder). I think I was also hoping for something about capital as a “real god”/demiurge or something and maybe that wasn’t a fair assumption to go in with
Mostly commenting to remind myself to come back and revisit this video at some point I guess but also hoping other comrades can help me articulate why it rubbed me the wrong way.
Is this actually from 1993 or is it one of those forums that measures all dates as September of that year - the eternal September
