I also love a tree paradise.
If I remember correctly, the maximum number of trees is around 210.

Corporate taxes - at least in Canada, you can have a year end any day of the year.
And yes, some older tax preparers don’t work in summer/fall.
Honestly, Animal Crossing in the game too.
It was nice while it lasted!
An interesting idea but I feel like there are too many loopholes. What about people who incorporate holding companies for their rentals? What about people who earn their income in their corporations, and can control if they are “low income” in the year they purchase a house? If there’s a lower earning spouse, can they be the ones to list it at whatever price? Canadian cities vary greatly with their real estate markets - will the cutoff price be decided in each city? Will the cutoff only be adjusted for inflation, or will it be adjusted based on market rates?
If there is tax planning to be had, the rich will find it!
I think this is pretty funny but depending on your players, they might check all 3 for mimics! Some of us were traumatized once and now we are very suspicious…
I grew up in rural Alberta and now live in one of the big cities. I like it a lot. There are so many different people here from all walks of life. Lots on Ontario and BC transplants too!
It’s getting more expensive, but I’m glad we could still afford a home here. But industry keeps growing here, so we will see how long it lasts.
People complain about the traffic but I think most commutes top out at 1 hour here. Compared to what I’ve heard in Toronto, where many people travel 1–2 hours each way.
Weather is good - very sunny, we have seasons, warm winds break up the cold winters.
I think the politics aren’t unusual - the cities are quite liberal and the countryside is very conservative. Seems to be the same in other provinces imo.
Just like in any place - it’s mostly normal people living their lives.
I switched from Android to iPhone mainly for the iMessage capabilities. I didn’t have any other reason at the time, but now I’ve started adding in to the ecosystem (AirPods, and now an iPad). The integration is really nice and smooth. I do like how “user-friendly” it is - while I can use other platforms just fine, iOS is just simple and easy.
I didn’t, really. Just kind of ended up here and it’s not bad.
Bean counter.
Meta (parent company of Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat) is releasing their Twitter alternative this week, Threads.
There’s been some discussion on Lemmy recently about Meta sniffing around forums and the fediverse, so some people have wondered if Meta will get into this space too.
I’ll add in my own thoughts! One thing is that I personally plan to only have 1 child for exactly this purpose. It feels like a “best of both worlds” - I can experience motherhood with the least amount of downtime in my own career.
It feels like hiring a nanny or housekeeper was taboo growing up in my neck of the woods, but I think we are slowly dispelling this idea that women can/should be doing EVERYTHING.
I once got a house cleaning quote for $250 and thought it was far too expensive. But then I wondered - am I still devaluing traditional “women’s work” to be worth less than minimum wage?
Get your wife on Lemmy and then she can be the one to comment! :)
They should learned fact-based sciences and important life skills, values should be taught by the parents.
While I can agree with this in theory, I think it is impossible in practice. We like to think that science is objective and that all decisions can be made in a bubble. However, everything is intertwined and human subjectivity is always present in science.
For example, intersex people are a fact. Some people can have both male and female sex organs. In addition, some people are sexually attracted to people of the same sex - this behaviour is present across the animal kingdom. Yet, if you taught this in a school, parents would complain about the “values” that these facts represent.
In addition, where do you draw the line with secularization? Schools take time off for Christmas and Easter, which are Christian holidays. Sure, you can rename them “winter break” and “spring break” - and yet, the spring break still aligns with the Easter holiday each year.
This society is built on Christian values. We need to recognize its existence in our everyday lives before we can begin to confront how it is harming members of our society and negotiate new ways of thinking.
Imo it is always hard to go from a movie/TV show to the book. Books create a universe inside your head, but now you’re already going into it with expectations. And when it doesn’t meet expectations, it’s disappointing.
I read The Handmaid’s Tale back around 2016, when Trump was elected. I was actually stunned that he had won - because like many others, I had missed the warning signs of a wave of populism. To me, this set the stage for The Handmaid’s Tale to feel like a very real possibility - if this guy is now in power, then what next?
It was easy to insert myself into the rather basic world of The Handmaid’s Tale especially with the humdrum details of everyday life. This dystopian world does not always look like outright torture or murder. It looks like fear, distrust, and control that has been normalized.
And quite frankly, I found that the Handmaid’s sole societal purpose of being continuously raped and impregnated is disturbing to the core. In your post, you’ve accepted that this is just part of the narrative. The abuse of female genitalia and reproduction is often overlooked in depictions of a dystopian world, so I think we’ve sanitized this brutal reality from the realm of possibilities. And yet, this is still a lived-reality for girls and women across the world today.
Sometimes I think I’ll be Hermione for life.
Not a great start if he was planning to show improvement this weekend…
