Your issue is one of branding, which is fair. Though, it is not a social media company’s responsibility to educate users on the distinction between “private” from other users and “encrypted” from government snooping.

Don’t mistake my opinion as a condemnation of online privacy. My point was privacy doesn’t exist on the internet without the proper encryption.

As it relates to the topic I think it was stupid to say something the FBI would perceive as a credible threat on something that wasn’t a secure communication. If someone said the same thing in a “private conversation” with an AI chatbot I wouldn’t be surprised if the FBI knocked on their door too.

Here’s the thing.

Never, ever, ever post dumb stuff like that in public. Don’t shout fire in a movie theater. Don’t shout bomb in an airport. Don’t talk about killing customers in the work groupchat. Unless you own the hardware or are using end-to-end encryption, it’s public. No excuse. User error.

• One should assume everything they say on the internet is public, even “private” messages on a social media app.
• The person who sent the message needed that reality check after saying something so stupid.
• Though this was a false alarm, it showed a semblance of responsibly from a social media company that is typically evil and indifferent.
• It is not the fault of the social media company that the FBI chose to act on the information.
