  • I went to Catholic school (in Canada) and was taught (by priests and nuns) that Christianity probably started as a mushroom cult, Jesus probably didn’t exist but was a composite of various wandering prophets/lunatics wandering around about that time (apparently it’s been a popular way for idle young men to pick up chicks for centuries), etc… The bible was taught as a (very flawed) historical document and not the literal “word of god” as it was decades before. Even services were performed as comforting archaic rituals rather than stodgy religious services. This was consistent across schools, and even the one that was the seat of a cardinal was no different.

The Catholic religion gets a lot of flack (and deservedly so!), but at least they recognize it’s basically just ritualistic bullshit (in Canada at least). Looking back, I think they are just happy to have people in their weird shroomless mushroom cult.

  • IMHO it’s a mental illness. “Without religion, people would rape all they want” is a great quote, because most of these people are projecting. They actually would go around raping all they wanted (and with great enthusiasm) if there wasn’t some authority to prevent them, because that’s who they are. They cannot comprehend people who voluntarily wouldn’t rape people even when they could, because they can’t put themselves into the head of other people.

  • Stack Overflow hasn’t been useful for at least 10 years, if not longer.

The flagged “correct” answer is almost always wrong due to idiotic power-users and the vast horde of idiots who upvote obviously wrong answers because they’re bootlickers. The real answer is usually buried in between the posts by gatekeepers, pedants, idiots with something to prove, wannabe admins, egotistical idiots, the highly opinionated technologically insecure, etc ad nauseam. Reddit is just as bad for tech questions, if not worse.

Since I started using LLMs (running on my own inference server) I haven’t used anything else for tech questions that wasn’t opinion-based. Much, much more useful, and it requires you to think seriously about the problem to come up with a good prompt – which often gives you the answer before you even finish the prompt.

If a writer cares so little about their audience that they put their article on Medium, it’s not worth reading.

The purpose of Medium is to sell advertising to generate as large a return for investors as possible. As a blogging or “journalism” platform it’s mostly a scam for those who don’t know better.

I had a friend who would say, “I’m tired of your bullshit” and just leave or hangup. A lot of my friends are on the spectrum (if not deep into it), so I’m used to them awkwardly making excuses or just leaving without a word. But this was the first time I saw someone use this quirk for comedic effect.
