31·2 天前Not the location of their operative HQ matters, it matters that the company is registered in the U.S., for example they are still subject to Cloud Act.

2·5 天前I’ve got a Fairphone 5. For Mobian we still need to add the patches for speaker audio. Then it is a usable phone. Camera works, but image quality is not yet the same as for Android, but it is slowly getting there. For now I just carry an Android phone for photos, but I expect that to be unnecessary within this year, seeing how much effort some people put into it.

3·5 天前Yes, jmp.chat is cool, unfortunately North American numbers, I’d love the same from the EU, if that exists.

2·6 天前I can’t recommend Stalwart enough.
It also does CalDAV and CardDAV and some other things… But even JMAP, which is like IMAP, but modern and not as weird.
Ltt.rs supports it on Android, it’s a lot faster and works well. Author is the same as for Conversations, THE Android XMPP client.
Stalwart is simple to set up and works reliably.

Linux Phones@lemmy.ca•[Smartphone] Linux in your smartphone: where do we stand?English
2·6 天前Yeah, also keep your main phone and make a slow switch. It will take a while to find your favourite software and figure things out. You might even try several UIs and might re-flash a couple of times. Most people are not comfortable having no usable phone for a couple of weeks.

4·6 天前Depends on what you want. A used Pixel 3a or some other model can be very cheap and has decent mainline support.

4·6 天前Then get an “Android phone” with decent mainline kernel support. Pixel 3a has decent support, several SDM845 phones have decent support, some others…

2·11 天前Looks cool, although all of the examples are things I’d just do quickly once I notice it needs doing and I believe planning those might increase the work load.
But I can see a use-case for other tasks, those that I tend to forget. Might give it a try. :)

Solarpunk technology@slrpnk.net•China develops iron battery 80 times cheaper than lithium that can last 16 years. It provides a budget-friendly, high-endurance answer for the world’s massive energy storage needs.English
42·12 天前I don’t care about batteries becoming cheaper. What I care about is them becoming safer.
I had far too many sudden spicy pillows in devices this year, I’d prefer something that isn’t as dangerous as Lithium-Ion.

2·13 天前Also, I can highly recommend inwx.com, they are cheap and competent, give you lots of options and support is great. Don’t use them for hosting, though, they do it but it’s not their main business and expensive.

Self Hosted - Self-hosting your services.@lemmy.ml•[Help] What considerations would you take into account when choosing a provider to buy a web domain for your server?English
2·13 天前Do i need WHOIS privacy?
We cannot tell you what level of privacy you need.
BTW, for example .eu domains only have an emailaddress public in Whois and your preferred language. In that case I’d say there is good privacy.
Do i need SSL support?
Yes, just configure TLS for anything that you host. Letsencrypt exist, after all. It doesn’t even cost you anything.
What else should i know before committing to buying a domain
If you ever use it for email, do not get rid of it. Just in case you later need to receive an email and to stop others from receiving your emails.
Do i need to use my actual details when registering a site? I dont like the idea of anyone being able to look up my personal information just because I have a domain for a server (but perhaps thats just the price of admission)
No need to enter valid data when registering a domain. If your data is invalid, many if not most NICs will revoke the domain. They require valid data to know who the customer is.
Also, battery will last much longer. Nowadays I have a tolino, but back when I had a Kindle, I kept it offline. I had no need for internet access. I just added books via Calibre and USB cable every now and then.
I think newer Kindle firmware requires setting up with an Amazon account at least once before it can be used offline, though.

Oh, YES. I’ve always wanted this.
Never got why we still have nationalist passports within the EU.
