There was a similar backlash to caviar and champagne when the Soviet Union made them cheap as hell, actual rich people have long since moved on to more exclusive social signifiers like yearly ski vacations and sailing that can’t be made cheap as easily so I think this is Gen X middle classers clinging to what they’ve got because they can’t afford to move the goalposts.
