I saw this on a (scammy) dating app and thought it was hilarious.

Sounds like something that Person A would label Person B as when Person B doesn’t like labels, not something Person B would label themselves as.

    I almost get this,…

Who cares what my labels are, if I’m interested in you, that’s that. Whatever you are, whatever I am, we’re done. If we’re having a good time we are winning.

On the other hand I acknowledge reality dictates that others want to pair with people they understand, and labels are labels because they are effective at helping people convey more complex ideas in efficient packages.

But then it comes full circle, if I label myself “no label” that’s still a label that coveys more ideas in an efficient package.

Easier to just have a “N/A” or similar option

So, what term should they use?

I mean, you can use ‘human’ for race/ethnic group, or ‘none’ for religion, but there’s no single word I know of for ‘I refuse to state my orientation.’

Yes, I know it’s not all that likely to come up in casual conversation, but now my curiosity is piqued.

How about ‘exploring’? En passant? Just browsing? Window-shopper? Touchy-feely? Uncommitted? Liberace? Nebulous? Plasma? Spork? Nothing more comes to mind.

According to my research, ‘dick’ can mean both a penis and sex in general. Sex in general is mostly a Southern US term and has fallen out of use over the years, but it is still cromulent.

Since the person wants their sexuality to remain hidden, the only logical term is ‘private dick.’

Just explain themselves each time instead of using the word.

I’m not like any other people labeled like “homosexual” or whatever. I’m a person who reject labels regarding their sexual identity or don’t identify as any particular label. Because I’m a person who reject labels regarding their sexual identity or don’t identify as any particular label…

I think a lot of these started showing up as a way for the LGBTQ+ to label themselves in a “if you’re going to use labels, let me be clear and define myself” sort of way.

Differentiation also makes people feel special. Apparently there’s a big rift between the Gays, Lesbians, and Bisexuals and the rest of the “spectrum”. The first half find the other half really petty and annoying.
