Air BnB used to be so cool. Just like everything else it has descended into a total garbage service. I used always book them when I traveled, but it’s considerably cheaper and you get much better services to just stay in a hotel now. That doesn’t even touch on how these opportunistic land lords keep housing out of the hands of citizens who actually want to live here and contribute to their communities.
I agree that the “clean the property or pay us a ridiculous amount” fees are stupid, and in your instance I would have gone full malicious compliance.
However, AB&B has it’s place, and most of the time is for extended stays with either a specific requirement or something you are explicitly wanting (lakefront, etc). I travel a lot, and only do AB&B or VRBO when vacationing with the full family and dogs.
IMHO that and staying with lots of friends or colleagues are the only valid reasons for AirBnB by now. I travel a lot and do appreciate the service level, not having to clean and having things like a gym, a pool and a working printer where I stay.
