I find that I need an easy-to-use text communication tool for a small group of family members. In a past life, I would’ve just ponied up for a private forum subscription on Delphi or PBWorks and used that. Today I’m leaning towards Rocket.chat or Element.

We just need to be able to share information and files about an event. Any suggestions?

Anything you’re missing on the dozen of chat apps like Signal, WhatsApp and such? Or those more targeted at groups like Discord and Matrix?

Trying to avoid anything touched by Facebook and other advertising companies. It may be impossible, though, given that it also needs to be fairly intuitive and easy to use.

Just trying to determine whether you just need a basic group messenger or actually need some team collab suite. Looks like you don’t.

I personally like Session Messenger. It’s originally forked from Signal, but doesn’t require a phone number or any registration, so it’s very simple from that perspective. Some good privacy/security to boot.

It supports groups and file sharing, although I’ve not tried file sharing in groups.

Signal, Telegram, Matrix and Discord are also popular.

Thanks for the suggestions. Now that I think of it, I’d probably use Skiff for collaboration. That may be an option here as well.

I just want to add that Signal is not associated with Facebook. WhatsApp is, but uses the Signal protocol. The creator of Signal actually worked with them to make sure they implemented it correctly. I totally get the aversion from anything Facebook related, but Signal itself, isn’t.

I was mostly reacting to WhatsApp and Messenger. Thanks for the info. Signal has its own issues, but I’m glad that being owned by Facebook isn’t one of them.
