All sorts of websites are trying to puritan it up by scrubbing away porn and any other ad unfriendly appearances, like youtube with their swear jar. So when it gets harder to find porn, people start posting more and more about porn in sfw ish subs like askreddit
And that is despite reddit banning a ton of NSFW subreddits over the past few years (or setting them to private).
thats probably why this spike is happening.
