The confederacy is the side that started the violence when the South Carolina militia attacked Fort Sumter because Lincoln won the presidency on a platform of stopping the expansion of slavery into newly acquired territoy. If the South hadn’t fought to keep slaves, the slaves would have been freed without violence.
