        A roll is the whole “log” of sushi before it’s cut up. This was clarified to me once in an awkward moment too. I was confused about menu prices.

          I thought it was pretty obvious because you roll to make the “log” and cut to make pieces, just like with roll cakes.

            Yeah, in the moment all I was thinking about was pieces not what they were once connected. I don’t think it’s a totally uncommon misconception.

            I think it happens because everywhere else on menus and in US culture we talk about pieces. We don’t talk in number of chickens. Just as an example.
