ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico State Police have released new details about the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old at the University of New Mexico that happened on July 25.

According to court documents filed in Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court, state police officers were notified by University of New Mexico Police of a homicide that happened at UNM in the Gila Dormitory of the Casa del Rio Housing complex on campus.

State police say in court documents the suspect, John Fuentes, went to the dorm parking lot at 8:00 p.m. on July 24 in a vehicle that was registered to his father. Fuentes met up with a freshman at UNM in the parking lot. At 10:20 pm.m. John and the UNM student met with the 14-year-old and another person and walked toward the dormitory.

Court documents say the fourth person in the room with the shooter and the two victims told state police agents that they were playing video games in the UNM student’s dorm room until an incident occurred. That person told police Fuentes appeared to be on drugs and shot the 14-year-old in the head. The 14-year-old died in the dorm room. The fourth person then told police Fuentes pointed the gun at them and then shot the UNM student in the head. After the shooting, the fourth person told police that they and the UNM student fled through a window and went to the UNM student’s home where family took them to UNM Hospital for treatment.

Court documents say gunfire was detected just after midnight on July 25 by the Albuquerque Police Department shot spotter.

State police say in court documents that Fuentes fled the dorm room and went toward his car. State police say Fuentes ended up on the first story roof of the Mesa Vista building where they say he smashed multiple windows, injuring himself.

State police say blood stains, a stolen Glock 9mm handgun, keys, and a pair of blue jeans were left on the roof of the Mesa Vista building.

State police say blood stains and videos showed that Fuentes traveled across campus and was picked up by two people in a pickup truck around 1:40 am on July 25.

State police say Fuentes was arrested by New Mexico State Police agents on Highway 314 in Los Lunas.

Fuentes has been charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence.
