OJ Simpson was a football player who was moderately famous for being a football player but was more famous for his 1994 trial for the alleged murder of his wife and her male friend. His lawyer, Robert Kardashian, managed to get him acquitted in one of the longest trials in American history (10 months), which was also highly publicized and politicized. His acquittal mostly centered around police misconduct and mishandling of evidence so it was a very polarizing case around the topic of racist cops planting evidence.

Years later, in 2003, Robert Kardashian’s daughter Kim was dating R&B singer Ray J and they made a sex tape. In 2006, Kim K was beginning to be known as a friend/aide of Paris Hilton due to her father’s recognizable name from a decade prior. In 2007 that tape was published by a porn company, who got their hands on it… somehow?

Anyway that tape blew up in the public zeitgeist and then the E! Entertainment network capitalized on this by offering a trashy reality TV show starring Kim and her family, which they accepted. The rest is public TV history.

So yeah. Their dad was a lawyer in a high profile case in the 90’s and everything else about them kind of stems from that root, and only mattered because everyone in America already knew the name Kardashian.
