Summary
Dr. Mehmet Oz, TV personality and former Senate candidate, has been nominated by Donald Trump to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which oversees health coverage for over 160 million Americans.
Oz, a cardiothoracic surgeon and former host of “The Dr. Oz Show,” has faced criticism for promoting unproven medical treatments, including hydroxychloroquine for Covid-19.
The nomination comes amid contentious Medicare drug price negotiations under the Inflation Reduction Act, which are being challenged by pharmaceutical companies.
The role requires Senate confirmation.
Let’s hope he drops the TV persona.
One, surgeons were already the dumb jocks of the medical community, relatively speaking. I know he’s got some legitimately brilliant feathers in his cap, but that brings us to…
Two, other than techbros, MD’s are maybe the worst offenders in the category of “I’m smart about some things, therefore I can easily intuit my way to mastery of all things, I have no blind spots, and my prejudices are simply common sense.”
Three, the man has been in a fame bubble for twenty plus years now.
I mean, Ben Carson is a legitimate dumbass.
BUT, he can cut conjoined twins in half. He’s good at that.
But on everything ELSE: certified dumbshit.
There are definitely some doctors that are susceptible to this (especially surgeons) but it’s worth pointing out that there are relatively few doctors in the billionaire class and doctors in general have not brought upon societal decay in the way that techbros have.
Most doctors spend their career simply treating patients under some type of corporate or insurance owned overlord.
And HOO BOY do some of them know it! 🤣
The broader point is well taken, though.
