Can anyone with a deeper understanding of the history of the metric system explain why a gram is the base unit of weight, and a litre the base unit of volume?

I thought the foundation of the system was that a kilogram is the weight of a litre of water. But then why not name them 1 thing = 1 thing rather than 1000x a thing = 1 thing.

You could say that about any law, not just “international”.

Look at how laws are applied in your country and you’ll probably find them disproportionately applied against the poor over the rich.

We can’t just set and forget laws. If you want them enforced justly, you need to be active in your political environment and elect people who will do that.

If you want international law applied to the US, you need to elect politicians who would be willing to push for sanctions against them until they comply.

Or if you’re American, vote for politicians who actually respect the international community.

Personally knowing Ukrainians who are currently defending their homes from Russian invasion, I think I will never forgive Russia for what they’ve done and the innocent people they’ve killed. Just like I would never forgive the US, or Israel or any country that commits similar atrocities. Putin ultimately bears responsible for this.

I appreciate the thoughtful responses you gave to everything though and it gave me reason to think through my own convictions too (even if they remain unchanged).
