I read recently of a variation of this. You play the game by intending to play it; you win when you forget you’re playing the game.

Thus, when you remember the game exists, you realize that you won!

It’s a two-fold curse - first, every single program these days isn’t a stand-alone program, it’s a glorified web browser. Hand-in-hand with that is the fact that, in order for these webpages-disguised-as-programs to behave in the way you normally expect a modern UI to act, it has to have five layers of javascript frameworks, each adding its own pile of cruft to the slagheap that is modern app design. It’s horrendous and I hate it.

There’s often a lot of fun cheats you can use - bitwise operators, etc - if your numbers are small powers of two.

Also it’s easier to organize memory, if you’re doing funky memory management tricks, if the memory you’re allocating fits nicely into the blocks available to you which are always in powers of two.

They’re not necessarily great reasons if you’re using a language with sufficient abstraction, but it’s still easier in most instances to use powers of two anyways if you’re getting into the guts of things.

The more progressive candidates win local elections, the more what constitutes “the Democratic party” changes.

New York City’s primaries just proved that this isn’t the case.

Except in this analogy, the cliff option includes a rider that they will genocide even harder.

I don’t know if you’ve been watching the current political climate in the USA, but ‘anywhere from fuckall to the bare minimum’ is drastically, ridiculously, absurdly better than what the GOP is doing when they are in power - and when first-past-the-post is the only voting method, and elections are as tight as they are, you can whinge all you want about the morality of voting for someone who doesn’t actually represent your interests, but not voting blue helps the GOP win.

The system is broken, yes, but harm reduction is the name of the game when it’s the only choice you are given.

Save the moralizing for primaries and local races. We’ve seen what happens when people withhold their vote, and what happens is fascism.

The critical part of ‘vote blue no matter who’ is the voting part. That’s the game plan short-term when it’s election season.

That does not preclude criticizing the incumbents. Or even the candidates. But no matter how you feel about them, you vote for them to stave off misery, and encourage everyone around you to do the same.

Not voting for them sends a message, but it’s the wrong message - and that message is that the populace prefers the GOP. Stop fascism in its tracks and vote blue. Fight for actual progress by doing what you can to forward actual progressive candidates and policies. Like NYC is doing right now.

It boggles my mind how people seem to be incapable of wrapping their head around that concept, and instead continue to insist that we shouldn’t be voting for DNC candidates because — uh - it’ll make things better??? Somehow??? At this point, the willful ignorance is starting to smack of sealioning.

Store it in an airtight container and you won’t have that problem.

Very few things refuse to work on Firefox mobile. The one exception I’ve run across is trying to log into Google, which insists that I should use a ‘compatible’ browser. Like Chrome.

If I switch what user agent Firefox is reporting so that it LOOKS like I’m using Chrome, it works perfectly, surprise, surprise. I hate Google.

Bernie came somewhat close to beating HRC in 2016

Bernie came close while simultaneously getting sandbagged at every opportunity by the DNC. If he’d gotten the same kind of attention as Hillary, there’s a very good chance he would have won.

DNC is only the party of progress because there isn’t another viable party that’s better at it. It’s up to us to push them to the left, because they’re really bad at doing it themselves. NYC proved that it’s possible; I only hope it mobilizes the rest of the left-leaning populace to take similar action. Vote blue and do what you can locally to enact change.

do a background check that takes about a day… then do the same background check but it takes a few days to a few weeks… then I have to wait 30 business days which is like 3 months…

Did that, didn’t stop me. And one month is three months, got it. That’s just time though.

oh and I need live fire training where I have to fire a minimum of 50 rounds which each round is taxed and I am given a pass/fail status by an old fudd who thinks I should never handle a firearm because I’m a registered Democrat…

Simple solution - don’t tell old fuddies who have power over you that you’re a Democrat.

I am severely limited in my choices as nearly every good personal defense firearm is banned either by name or because it has a useful feature like threaded barrels to mount a suppressor which will help with my hearing loss as I age… I probably won’t get what I want either because the standard mag comes with a capacity of 11 or more rounds…

I understand that making a decision on personal defense firearms is a difficult choice. Just because your options are limited, though, doesn’t mean you can’t find a piece that works for you. And WEAR FUCKING HEARING PROTECTION WHEN YOU SHOOT. Y’know, like everyone else does. If you’re in a life-or-death situation, sure, you’re going to suffer from having to shoot an unsilenced gun, but better a ringing in your ears than starving to death in a foreign prison.

Oh man I would have loved to be in that conversation. Instead of cringing, you start walking them through some of the more advanced corollaries that proceed from that one realization. Keep going until you break them. At that point, you can start having actual interesting conversations with them.

Erm. I’m trying to clear up what I thought looked like misconceptions you have about AI in regards to real-world applications, but I seem to have come on too strong, and I apologize; I have a tendency to put on a know-it-all attitude and it’s something I’m trying to work on.
