It’s not, this headline is trash
The article isn’t a lot better. Some whining about “it could have been USB-C” (I’m pretty sure it couldn’t and that the whole point of the external battery pack is that most of the power management for the individual components is happening on the battery to save weight on the headset), some whining that it’s insane to plug that box into another battery, very little of substance.
Seriously?! $3500 and it’s lightning?!
It’s not even something you need to plug or unplug, it’s supposed to be more or less permanently attached to the battery. You need to use a special tool to unplug it.
Which means a good thing, the battery is replaceable!!!
Yeah and the capacity of the thing is small given the size of the battery. I think it means you’ll be able to buy a third party battery that is the same physical size but has like 5 times the capacity. Rather than just 2 hours of battery life, you might get 10. Not really clear why Apple didn’t offer a larger capacity.
given the connector , it’s not just a bunch of cells in that box. So not sure if we’ll be able to cram more W/h in the same space but I can definitely see larger boxes with longer battery life. My guess is they didn’t want to make a bulky and heavy device. If you want to be on it for longer then plug in the wall (or a secondary battery pack)
I’m guessing most/all of the processing of power for the components is happening on the brick, and that the pins are individual power per component and whatever signals are needed back. You won’t be able to just replace the brick with third party ones because it’s more than just a battery. I could easily see third party packs with a dock-like cutout for the brick to feel like one piece though. It wouldn’t be hard to do.
Maybe, but the marketing shows the M2 and R1 chips behind the lenses of the device. Hard to know…
Why would a cable being attached prevent it from being replaced?

The cable is not fixed on the other side. If you replace the battery, you could just get a new cable with it.
