Anyone that thinks this wasn’t intentional is a fool. They are just testing the waters.

Bad feedback? Then shelve it and try it again in a couple years. Regardless, Pandora’s box as been opened and all the other game companies now will be eyeing this new ‘feature’ for future implementation real soon.

Okay , but if this was a so-called accident, why is there even a function in the game for pop-ups?

It’s supposed to be in the game but in the main menu instead of the pause menu. They’ve had main menu popups for dlc for years, not sure if I’ve seen ads for other games before.

horseshit, this was a canary launch. if we hadn’t thrown a fit we could look forward to “To turn on Seven Up Subtitles, press pause, wait for the unskippable ad to play, go the the ‘Settings Brought to You By Doritos™’ menu, select the ‘RAID Shadow Legends Options Menu’, wait for the unskippable ad to play, then select ‘Seven Up Subtitles’.”

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Ubisoft is blaming an unspecified “technical error” for a fullscreen pop-up ad that appeared in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey this week.

Reddit users say they spotted the pop-up on Xbox and PlayStation versions of the game, with an ad appearing just when you navigate to the map screen.

“This is disgusting to experience while playing,” remarked one Reddit user, summarizing the general feeling against such pop-ups in the middle of gameplay.

“We have been made aware that some players encountered pop-up ads while playing certain Assassin’s Creed titles yesterday,” says Ubisoft spokesperson Fabien Darrigues, in a statement to The Verge.

Either way, the intent of adding pop-ups into the middle of a game you’ve paid for is rather “gross” as one Reddit commenter puts it.

Imagine a world full of games you’ve paid $70 for and then ads popping up in the middle of gameplay.

This story has essentially caused a 20% off coupon for Assassin’s Creed Mirage to circulate my lemmy feed for the past 2 days. I am a chubby man with a weak heart that hungers for these types of comfort food games and this subliminal advertising is hard for me to resist.
