tl;dw: Johnson and Johnson is using a legal loophole to extend a patent on a life-saving drug, preventing generics from being made. Scientists estimate this will lead to 6 million more people dying of tuberculosis over the next four years, because they cannot afford the high-priced name-brand drug.
This makes me hate working in the pharmaceutical industry. On the one hand, I do believe that the science myself and my colleagues produce is tight and can and will save lives. On the other is shit like this which squanders the potential of scientific contributions to humanity. I’m not one of these tech bros who thinks we’re going to magically science and math our way out of every problem by joining hands with industry and making profits. I just want to use my abilities in science to help people. Why can’t I do that?
